Japan and Canada have upgraded their bilateral relationship to a “Comprehensive and Strategic Partnership,” following high-level talks in Tokyo between Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. The leaders signed a joint declaration aimed at deepening cooperation across security, economic, and cyber domains.

Prime Minister Takaichi emphasized Canada as a key strategic partner in supporting a “Free and Open Indo-Pacific” vision. She noted that in the context of current global challenges, elevating bilateral ties to the new partnership level reflects both countries’ commitment to addressing shared concerns.

The joint declaration outlines plans to strengthen security cooperation, initiate dialogues on economic security, and enhance consultations on cyber policy. Both leaders also agreed to improve mechanisms for citizen protection, including information sharing and mutual assistance.
