Hamas calls for accountability after UN details torture in Israeli jails
Hamas says a newly released report by the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights provides clear and undeniable proof of the Israeli occupation’s systematic abuse of Palestinian prisoners, describing the documented practices as war crimes.
In a statement, the movement said the report—based on testimonies from Palestinians who were recently released from Israeli detention—confirms long-standing claims of widespread torture and degrading treatment inside occupation prisons. Hamas stressed that the findings expose a pattern of deliberate violations rather than isolated incidents.
According to the UN account, former detainees described being subjected to physical and psychological torture, coercion and blackmail, and the denial of basic rights, including medical care and access to toilets. Hamas said such practices reflect the “fascist nature” of the occupation and represent grave and unprecedented breaches of international law.
The movement called on the international community, the International Criminal Court, and United Nations bodies to act on the report’s conclusions. It urged the launch of an independent international investigation, the prosecution of Israeli officials responsible for the abuses, and the imposition of meaningful sanctions to deter further crimes. Hamas said these steps are necessary to stop the ongoing violations and to secure the immediate release of all Palestinian detainees.
The UN report also revealed alarming allegations of attempted forced displacement. Several former prisoners said Israeli officers offered them money to leave Gaza with their families and resettle in Egypt on the condition that they never return. Rights groups cited in the report described this as forced displacement carried out under pressure.
Other testimonies detailed what detainees called a “living hell” inside Israeli prisons, including blindfolded and handcuffed strip searches, prolonged denial of medical treatment, and the deliberate deprivation of toilet access as a form of psychological abuse. Legal experts noted that such practices amount to serious violations of human dignity and international humanitarian law. (ILKHA)
