9 killed, 25 injured in mass shooting in Canada
Nine people were killed and at least 25 others injured in a series of shootings at a secondary school and a nearby home in western Canada, authorities have confirmed.
Police said seven victims were fatally shot inside Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, while two more bodies were discovered at a residence close to the school, believed to be connected to the attack. The victims’ identities and ages have not yet been released as officials notify families.
The suspected attacker was later found dead with what police described as a self-inflicted injury, bringing the death toll to ten, including the shooter. Investigators say they have identified the suspect but are withholding the name and gender at this stage. Earlier in the incident, a shelter-in-place alert described the suspect as a female wearing a dress with brown hair, though police have not officially confirmed those details.
Emergency services rushed to the scene after reports of an active shooter, triggering lockdowns across the small community. Dozens of injured people were taken to hospital, several of them in critical condition. Authorities later lifted the shelter-in-place order, saying there was no further threat to the public.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he was “devastated by today’s horrific shootings,” announcing that he had suspended a planned trip to Germany in response to the tragedy. Provincial and local leaders also expressed condolences, praising first responders for their rapid action.
Police have not disclosed the type of firearm used or a possible motive, and the investigation remains ongoing. Schools in the area have been closed as counselors and support services are deployed to help students, staff, and families cope with the aftermath of one of the deadliest school-related attacks in Canada in recent years.
