20 endangered African grey parrots seized at Istanbul Airport
Turkish authorities have seized 20 endangered African grey parrots discovered in the luggage of two foreign nationals arriving from Libya at Istanbul Airport, officials said on Tuesday.
In a statement, the General Directorate of Nature Conservation and National Parks (DKMP) said the birds were found during baggage inspections carried out after the passengers disembarked from an international flight.
Authorities noted that the African grey parrot species is listed under Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), which strictly regulates international trade in endangered species. The necessary documentation required for legal transport was reportedly not presented.
Customs enforcement officers confiscated the parrots and transferred them to wildlife protection teams. The birds have since been placed under protection, while administrative proceedings were initiated against the individuals involved.
Wildlife trafficking remains a significant concern globally, with airports serving as key transit points in illegal trade routes between Africa, the Middle East and Europe. African grey parrots, native to equatorial Africa, are particularly vulnerable due to high demand in the exotic pet market.
Turkish authorities did not immediately disclose the condition of the birds or whether further legal action beyond administrative measures would follow.
The seizure underscores ongoing efforts by Turkish customs and conservation authorities to combat illegal wildlife trafficking in line with international conservation commitments. (ILKHA)
