Syrian army takes control of al-Shaddadi base after coordination with U.S.
The Syrian Army has assumed control of the al-Shaddadi military base in northeastern Syria’s Hasakah province, following coordination with U.S. officials, according to the Syrian Defense Ministry’s media department.
In a statement carried by Syrian Arab News Agency, the ministry said the base was formally handed over after arrangements were completed with U.S. authorities. Syrian army units have since moved to secure the facility and its surrounding perimeter.
The transfer comes just days after Damascus announced it had taken control of the al-Tanf military base in southeastern Syria. On February 12, the Defense Ministry said the handover of al-Tanf followed direct coordination between Syrian and American officials, marking a significant shift in the military presence in the area.
United States Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed its withdrawal from al-Tanf after nearly a decade of operations there. In a statement, CENTCOM said U.S. forces remain prepared to respond to any potential threats from ISIS and will continue supporting partner-led efforts aimed at preventing the group’s resurgence in the region.
The twin handovers of al-Shaddadi and al-Tanf signal a broader reconfiguration of military deployments in Syria’s northeast and southeast, areas that have long been focal points in the fight against ISIS and in wider regional dynamics.
Syrian officials described the developments as part of ongoing efforts to reassert state authority over strategic sites, while U.S. officials emphasized that counterterrorism operations against ISIS remain a priority despite the withdrawal from specific bases. (ILKHA)
