Iran FM says missile program not up for negotiation as US pushes broader deal
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has rejected U.S. calls to include Iran’s ballistic missile program in any future agreement, stressing that the country’s missile capability is “non-negotiable.”
Speaking during events marking the 47th anniversary of the Iranian Revolution in Tehran, Araghchi said no party has the right to interfere with Iran’s missiles, describing them as a core element of the country’s national defense. “No one can make the slightest intervention in Iran’s missiles. Our missiles are not, and will never be, a subject of negotiations,” he said, according to Iran’s state media.
Araghchi’s remarks came in response to comments made a day earlier by U.S. President Donald Trump, who said any potential agreement with Iran should go beyond the nuclear file to also cover Tehran’s ballistic missile program.
Addressing questions on ongoing contacts with Washington, Araghchi noted that there is currently no fixed date or location for the next round of talks, indicating that discussions remain at a preliminary stage.
International media outlets reported on Tuesday that Iran has reiterated its long-standing position that while it may engage in talks on nuclear-related issues, its missile program remains a “red line.” The reports highlighted growing friction between Tehran and Washington, as the United States continues to press for a broader framework, while Iran insists on limiting negotiations strictly to the nuclear domain.
The latest exchange underscores the persistent gaps between the two sides, with Iran maintaining that its defensive capabilities are essential for national security and cannot be traded in diplomatic negotiations, despite renewed diplomatic efforts and mediation initiatives in the region. (ILKHA)
