Bulgarian President appoints caretaker Prime Minister nominee
Bulgarian President Iliana Iotova has appointed Andrey Gyurov as the nominee for caretaker prime minister, initiating the process of forming an interim government amid ongoing political uncertainty in the country.
In a statement released by the Bulgarian Presidency, it was announced that President Iotova will formally request Gyurov to propose a caretaker cabinet during a special ceremony scheduled for Thursday.
Under Bulgaria’s constitution, no fixed deadline is specified for the caretaker prime minister nominee to submit a cabinet list. However, in practice, the process typically takes around one week.
If approved by the president, the caretaker government will replace the coalition administration led by Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov, who resigned in December, paving the way for early parliamentary elections.
In line with constitutional requirements, the president is also expected to set a date for snap elections, which must be held within two months of the dissolution of parliament.
Andrey Gyurov currently serves as deputy governor of the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB). His nomination has been widely covered by international media, which have highlighted his technocratic background and the caretaker government’s role in ensuring a smooth transition toward early elections.
Bulgaria has experienced prolonged political instability in recent years, marked by repeated elections and short-lived governments, leaving caretaker administrations with a critical role in maintaining state continuity. (ILKHA)
