At least seven dead in Egypt road accident
At least seven people were killed and six others injured after a minibus carrying workers collided with a truck on a highway in northwestern Egypt, local authorities said.
According to official statements, the crash occurred early in the morning on the Matruh–Sallum road when a truck struck the minibus from behind, triggering a fire at the scene. Emergency services rushed to the area, and six ambulances transported the injured to the nearest state hospital for treatment.
The Matrouh Governorate said initial assessments indicate that excessive speed and poor road lighting were key factors contributing to the deadly collision. Security forces and traffic officials launched an investigation to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
No further casualties were reported, and authorities confirmed that rescue operations were completed shortly after the crash, with no victims believed to be trapped under the wreckage.
Fatal road accidents remain a persistent problem in Egypt, where thousands of people lose their lives each year due to speeding, traffic violations, and inadequate road infrastructure. In recent years, the government has undertaken major road modernization projects aimed at improving traffic flow and enhancing safety, though deadly incidents continue to occur, particularly on highways linking remote regions.
The latest crash once again highlights the risks faced by daily workers commuting long distances and underscores ongoing concerns over road safety enforcement across the country.(ILKHA)
