Araqchi, IAEA chief hold crucial technical talks in Geneva ahead of Iran-US negotiations
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met with Rafael Grossi, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, in Geneva for in-depth technical discussions ahead of indirect nuclear negotiations between Tehran and Washington.
According to a statement issued by Iran’s Foreign Ministry, the meeting took place at Araghchi’s residence in Geneva, prior to a new round of indirect talks scheduled between Iranian and US delegations.
The ministry said the two sides exchanged views on technical matters related to cooperation between Tehran and the Agency within the framework of Iran’s safeguards obligations. Discussions also took into account a law passed by Iran’s parliament last June suspending certain aspects of bilateral cooperation with the IAEA.
Iranian officials stated that Tehran presented its technical perspectives concerning the upcoming indirect negotiations with the United States.
Following the meeting, Grossi wrote on the social media platform X that the sides had held “in-depth technical discussions” in preparation for what he described as important talks scheduled for Tuesday.
Earlier in the day, Araghchi said on X that Iranian nuclear experts were accompanying him during his visit to Geneva and would participate in detailed technical consultations with the IAEA chief. He also confirmed plans to meet with Oman’s Foreign Minister Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi, underscoring Muscat’s continued mediating role in the diplomatic process.
“ I am in Geneva with real ideas to reach a fair and equitable agreement. What is not on the table is surrender in the face of threats,” Araghchi stated.
The indirect negotiations between Iran and the United States resumed earlier this month, with the first round held on February 6 in Muscat. The US delegation was led by special envoy Steve Witkoff, who is also expected to head the American team in Geneva, according to US media reports.
Switzerland has long played a key diplomatic role in facilitating communication between Tehran and Washington, representing US interests in Iran since diplomatic relations were severed in 1980.
The Geneva talks are viewed as a critical moment in efforts to manage tensions surrounding Iran’s nuclear program, as both sides signal readiness for engagement while maintaining firm public positions on core issues. (ILKHA)
