Thousands gather in Diyarbakır to honor Karbala, Susa martyrs and Gaza
A commemorative program marking the month of Muharram was held in Diyarbakır, bringing together Muslims to remember the enduring struggle against oppression from Karbala to Gaza, while honoring the sacrifices of Imam Hussein (RA), Sheikh Said, the Susa martyrs, and the people of Palestine.
The event, jointly organized by the Mustazaflar Cemiyeti (Society of the Oppressed) and the Martyrs' Caravan Platform, took place at Roboski Park in Diyarbakır's Kayapınar district.
The program focused on key episodes of persecution in Islamic history, including the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (RA) and his companions in Karbala, the execution of Sheikh Said and his companions on June 29, 1925, the killing of Muslims in the Susa (Yolaç) Mosque massacre in Silvan on June 26, 1992, and the continuing humanitarian tragedy in Gaza under Israeli attacks and blockade.
The gathering began with a recitation from the Holy Quran by Hafız Ömer Akgül, followed by nasheeds performed by the Davet and Youth Movement Nasheed Group. A documentary presentation later reflected on the sacrifices made in Karbala, the struggle of Sheikh Said, the Susa massacre, and the suffering of the Palestinian people in Gaza.
'The struggle between truth and falsehood continues'
Addressing the audience, Molla Recai Güler said the conflict between truth and falsehood has continued since the time of Prophet Adam (AS), linking the sacrifice of Imam Hussein (RA) with later struggles against oppression.
"The struggle between truth and falsehood began when Prophet Adam was sent to the earth," Güler said. "Throughout history, some have stood with guidance and justice, while others have sided with oppression and tyranny. This struggle continues today."
He described Islamic history as a history of faith, sacrifice, jihad, dawah, heroism, and martyrdom, emphasizing that believers have consistently been called to defend justice despite persecution.
Imam Hussein remembered as symbol of resistance to tyranny
Speaking about the tragedy of Karbala, Güler said Imam Hussein (RA), the beloved grandson of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), refused to legitimize injustice by pledging allegiance to Yazid.
"When an unjust ruler sought leadership over the Muslim Ummah, Imam Hussein could not remain silent," he said.
Recalling prophetic traditions praising Imam Hussein (RA), Güler described him as an enduring symbol of resistance against tyranny.
"Imam Hussein is the symbol of those who stand against oppression. His sacrifice remains an example for every generation seeking justice."
He urged Muslim families to raise their children with love for the Quran, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), and the Ahl al-Bayt.
Sheikh Said remembered for commitment to Islamic values
The program also marked the anniversary of the execution of Sheikh Said and his companions in 1925.
Güler said Sheikh Said sought to defend Islamic values during a period of profound political transformation and remained steadfast in his beliefs despite facing execution.
Quoting Sheikh Said's reported final words before his execution, Güler said:
"I have no complaint about this scaffold. Let everyone know that my struggle is for Allah and His religion."
He also recounted Sheikh Said's statement that his own sacrifice could never be considered greater than that of Imam Hussein (RA), describing his determination to remain faithful to his principles regardless of the consequences.
Susa martyrs and Gaza remembered
Güler further remembered the Muslims killed in the Susa Mosque massacre in Silvan in 1992, describing them as continuing the tradition of sacrifice exemplified by Imam Hussein (RA) and Sheikh Said.
Drawing connections between historical and contemporary suffering, he said the names of oppressors may change over time, but the struggle against injustice remains constant.
He also expressed solidarity with the people of Gaza, stating that Palestinians continue to endure hardship while resisting occupation and destruction.
"Our duty is to learn Islamic history well, know the Ahl al-Bayt of the Prophet, and follow their example in standing for justice and truth," he said.
The commemoration concluded with a theatrical performance depicting the events of Karbala by the Sur Scenes Theater Group. The performance, portraying the sacrifice of Imam Hussein (RA) and his companions, deeply moved those in attendance and brought the Muharram remembrance program to a close. (ILKHA)
