Italy launches investigation into tech company over subscription price increases
Italy’s Competition Authority has launched an investigation into alleged irregularities linked to subscription price increases for Microsoft 365 services, focusing on how information was communicated to consumers.
The authority said it is examining Microsoft Ireland Operations Ltd. and Microsoft S.r.l. over concerns related to the way price changes were presented to users of the subscription-based service.
According to the regulator, the investigation focuses on claims that information about price increases was delivered in a fragmented and unclear manner, making it difficult for consumers to fully understand the changes.
Authorities also said the integration of artificial intelligence-based features such as “Copilot” and “Designer” into Microsoft 365 was not clearly communicated to users as part of the updated subscription structure.
Another key point under investigation is whether users were automatically transferred to higher-priced plans unless they actively canceled their subscriptions, potentially limiting consumer choice.
Consumer rights groups said the probe highlights broader concerns over the practices of major technology companies in relation to competition rules and consumer protection.
If violations are confirmed, the company could face significant administrative fines, while legal steps may also be taken to allow users to recover overpayments.(ILKHA)
