Erdoğan appoints new justice and interior ministers in cabinet reshuffle
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on Tuesday announced changes to his cabinet, appointing Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor Akın Gürlek as the new Minister of Justice and replacing Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya in a limited cabinet reshuffle.
According to a presidential decree published in the Official Gazette shortly after midnight, Gürlek will take over the justice portfolio from Yılmaz Tunç. At the same time, Mustafa Çiftci, who has been serving as the governor of Türkiye’s eastern province of Erzurum, was appointed as the new Minister of Interior, replacing Yerlikaya.
Both Yerlikaya and Tunç had assumed their ministerial roles following the ruling Justice and Development Party’s (AK Party) victory in the 2023 general elections.
The reshuffle marks one of the first significant changes to Erdoğan’s cabinet since the post-election appointments, and is seen as part of ongoing efforts to recalibrate the government’s leadership as it addresses domestic and regional challenges.
No official explanation was provided for the changes, and outgoing ministers have not yet commented publicly on their departures. (ILKHA)
