France detects first Ebola case in returnee from DR Congo
The French Ministry of Health has announced the detection of an Ebola virus case within the country, marking a significant development as European health authorities monitor global outbreak risks.
According to a ministry statement, the virus was identified in a doctor who had recently returned to France from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Officials confirmed that the individual has been placed under strict isolation and is currently receiving treatment under close medical surveillance.
The ministry emphasized that this is the first Ebola case recorded in France during the current period. Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu is reportedly monitoring the developing situation closely.
The case follows a major health crisis in the DRC, where an Ebola outbreak was officially declared on May 15 after 246 suspected cases and 65 deaths were recorded in the eastern province of Ituri.
Shortly after, on May 17, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the resurgence of the virus a public health emergency of international concern to mobilize global containment efforts.
Health officials have indicated that the ongoing outbreak is driven by the rare "Bundibugyo" strain of the Ebola virus. Experts note that there is currently no approved vaccine or specific treatment method available for this particular variant. (ILKHA)
