Molla Said Varol: A beacon of courage, knowledge, and sincerity in the path of Islam
Eight years have passed since the tragic traffic accident that took him from this world, yet the legacy of Molla Muhammed Said Varol continues to inspire thousands of Muslims across the region.
A prominent scholar, dedicated mujahid, and sincere servant of the Hizbullah Jamaah, Molla Said is being remembered today with deep respect, prayers, and immense gratitude for his lifelong commitment to ilm, dawah, and the cause of Islam.
Molla Said Varol passed away on 12 June 2018 while living in the blessed state of hijrah (muhacerat). Known among his brothers for his extraordinary courage, vast Islamic knowledge, exemplary moral character, unwavering loyalty to the Islamic cause, and profound self-sacrifice, he spent many years in the oppressors’ prisons and the final seven years of his life as a muhajir, never abandoning service to the Deen until his final moments.
Born on 13 March 1967 in the Yağlıca (Cimsarê) hamlet of Çakıllı (Bênarin) village, Beşiri district, Batman, Molla Said grew up in a household of knowledge. He was the son of the respected scholar Molla Emin Varol. From early childhood, his sharp intellect, maturity beyond his years, and deep love for the Quran and Sunnah were apparent to everyone around him. He began his formal journey of sacred knowledge at his father’s feet and progressed rapidly through the traditional madrasa system. Studying under the region’s most renowned Seydas, he mastered the Islamic sciences and earned his ijazah, qualifying him as a teacher and guide.
From the 1980s, Molla Said immersed himself fully in the Islamic struggle. Armed with deep ilm, keen foresight, and exceptional organizational skills, he brought barakah and energy to every circle he entered. Whether in times of ease or extreme hardship, he was always found at the front lines, protecting the Islamic cause with his own body and soul, demonstrating the true spirit of a mujahid who fears only Allah.
Defender of the Faithful in Hard Times
In the 1990s, when tyrannical forces launched brutal campaigns to annihilate pious Muslims in Silvan and surrounding areas, Molla Said stood bravely alongside his brothers. In the “land of martyrs,” where massacres and persecution were widespread, he played a pivotal role in building resistance, patience, and the spirit of sacrifice. He helped transform sorrow into strength and contributed significantly to the awakening of Muslim youth. With his strategic mind, he analyzed situations quickly, developed sound plans, and guided the movement through critical moments. He firmly believed that true knowledge must be lived in the field of action, not merely in books, and he poured all his strength into dawah, education, and the unification of Muslims.

A Guide Especially for the Youth
Molla Said had a special affection for the younger generation. He was rarely at home, instead walking street by street and door to door, calling young Muslims to the path of truth and righteousness. While assisting his elder brother Molla Mizgin at a bookstore in Silvan, he turned the shop into a vibrant center of Islamic learning and guidance. His brother later recalled: “When my brother Sait joined me, our struggling bookstore began to make profit. More importantly, it became a hub where students gathered for lessons.” In an era when bookstores served as informal madrasas and dawah centers, Molla Said’s efforts left a lasting impact on hundreds of young souls.
He lived a life of complete humility and sincerity, shunning fame and ostentation. Those close to him noted that he drew much of his noble character from the example of Hüseyin Velioğlu, the founding guide of the Hizbullah Jamaah. He carried out his services so quietly and with such ihlas that only those nearest to him fully understood the depth of his contributions.
Unbreakable Courage and Steadfastness Under Torture
Molla Said was a true symbol of courage. He never bowed to tyrants or oppressors. In one notable incident in Silvan, when a righteous Muslim family running an auto repair shop was being harassed and oppressed by jealous neighbors, Molla Said stood with them. A violent clash erupted, leaving him bloodied, yet he remained firm in defending justice.
His tireless efforts eventually drew the wrath of the secular 28 February regime. In 2000, he was detained and subjected to more than 70 days of severe torture, which caused partial paralysis in his body. Despite the immense physical suffering, once transferred to prison, he turned the prison cells into a living madrasa. As the chief mudarris, he continued teaching and raising scholars and committed Muslims, even while battling the after-effects of torture and illness.
He was deeply grieved by the disunity of the Ummah. He often said, “If it were in my power, I would gather all the ulama of the Muslim world in one building and not allow them to leave until they unite upon the truth.” This concern for ittihad (unity) remained one of his greatest priorities throughout his life.
In prison, his character shone brightly. He never argued with or hurt any brother. Prisoners competed to be in his ward because of his kindness, wisdom, and peaceful nature. Even in freezing winter conditions, he continued his lessons, wrapping himself in nylon sheets to protect against the cold while teaching those in lower wards. This extreme dedication eventually led to serious illness and surgery, yet it never stopped his service.

Years of Hijrah and a Martyr’s Departure
Released in 2010 after nearly a decade in prison, new persecution campaigns forced him back into hijrah. For eight more years, he lived as a muhajir, continuing his Islamic activities in secrecy and sincerity. On the evening of 12 June 2018, while walking with his wife for fresh air and light exercise, Molla Said was struck by a passing vehicle. His wife rushed to his side, but he was unable to speak. In the land of hijrah, far from comfort and ease, this devoted servant of Allah returned to his Lord.Thousands of Muslims attended his funeral in Batman. His blessed body was carried on the shoulders of his students, comrades, and loved ones, accompanied by continuous takbirs and salawat, as he was laid to rest in his homeland.
Legacy That Lives On
Molla Muhammed Said Varol leaves behind a shining example of a life fully dedicated to Allah’s cause. His courage in the face of tyranny, sincerity in service, love for the youth, and burning desire for the unity of the Ummah remain as guidance for the coming generations.
May Allah (subhanahu wa ta’ala) elevate his rank among the righteous, accept his struggles in His path, and grant him the highest levels of Jannah alongside the prophets, martyrs, and truthful servants. May He allow the seeds he planted to blossom into a strong, knowledgeable, and united Muslim community.
The Ummah continues to say: Rahimahullah. May Allah make his memory a source of strength and guidance for all who strive in His way. (ILKHA)
