At least 11 killed, 16 injured ib Russian attack on Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia
A Russian strike on the southeastern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia killed at least 11 people, including three children, and wounded at least 16 others on Saturday, Oct. 10, local authorities said, as Russia launched a large-scale overnight drone attack across Ukraine.
Mykhaylo Semikin, acting head of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration, described the attack as “a terrible pain for the entire Zaporizhzhia region,” confirming that 11 civilians had been killed.
“People are still being searched for under the rubble of destroyed houses,” Semikin said, warning that the casualty toll could rise as rescue operations continued.
Ivan Fedorov, co-chair of the regional defense council, earlier reported that at least 16 people had been injured in the attack.
Images released by Ukrainian authorities showed heavily damaged residential buildings and the aftermath of the strike in the city.
According to Ukraine’s State Emergency Service, a Russian aerial bomb destroyed an entire entrance section of an apartment building, while other apartment blocks and private homes also sustained damage.
Emergency crews extinguished fires and continued searching through the rubble for possible survivors.
Among those injured were a 14-year-old girl and a 12-year-old boy, the emergency service said.
The strike on Zaporizhzhia came as Russia launched 160 attack drones against Ukraine overnight, including 110 jet-powered Shahed drones, according to the Ukrainian Air Force.
By 9 a.m. local time, Ukrainian air defenses had shot down or suppressed 117 drones, including 82 jet-powered drones, the Air Force said.
Hits were recorded at 14 locations, while falling debris was reported at 10 other sites.
The attack was still ongoing at the time of the Air Force's statement, with several Russian drones remaining in Ukrainian airspace.
Separately, Russia’s Defense Ministry said on Oct. 10 that Russian forces had destroyed a bulk carrier at sea that Moscow claimed was transporting military cargo for the Ukrainian armed forces to the port of Odesa.
The ministry did not provide further details about the vessel, its location or the circumstances of the alleged strike.
The claim could not be independently verified.
The latest attacks underscore the continuing threat to Ukrainian cities and civilian infrastructure as Russian aerial strikes and Ukrainian air defense operations continue across the country. (ILKHA)
