Artists and activists raise £1.5 million for Gaza at London solidarity concert

Hundreds of artists, activists and public figures gathered in London on Wednesday night for a solidarity concert titled Together for Palestine, raising funds for humanitarian aid in Gaza.
The event, held at Wembley Arena, featured performances by Bastille, James Blake, Paloma Faith, Jamie xx and PinkPantheress, alongside Palestinian musicians Sama’ Abdulhadi, Saint Levant and Elyanna.
Actors Florence Pugh, Nicola Coughlan and Benedict Cumberbatch, journalist Mehdi Hasan, former footballer Eric Cantona and UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese also took to the stage with speeches. The concert was organized by veteran musician Brian Eno, who read Palestinian writer Khaled Juma’s poem “O naughty children of Gaza”.
The stage design was created by Palestinian artist Malak Mattar in collaboration with renowned designer Es Devlin. The set incorporated works of eight Palestinian artists who were killed in recent Israeli attacks.
Proceeds from ticket sales will be distributed through the UK-based charity Choose Love to Palestinian aid organizations including the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund (PCRF), the Palestinian Medical Relief Society, and Taawon. By the end of the evening, organizers announced the concert had raised £1.5 million (about $2 million).
Several speakers used the platform to criticize celebrity silence over the war in Gaza. “To stay silent in the face of such suffering is not neutrality, it is complicity.”Florence Pugh declared. “Many artists with millions of followers remain silent.” Nicola Coughlan added.Paloma Faith made a statement of her own, appearing on stage in a dress made from the traditional Palestinian keffiyeh.
The concert took place shortly after a UN report accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza, and just days after Israel announced a new ground offensive on the enclave.
Ahead of the event, global stars including Billie Eilish, Cillian Murphy, Joaquin Phoenix, Brian Cox and Steve Coogan released a video calling for an immediate cease-fire. Similar shows of solidarity have recently appeared at major awards ceremonies, where artists displayed keffiyehs and other symbols of support for Palestine.(ILKHA)
