President Erdoğan hosts high-level EU delegation in Ankara
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan received senior European Union officials at the Presidential Complex in Ankara on Tuesday.
The meeting brought together the European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the European Commission Kaja Kallas, European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos, and European Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration Magnus Brunner.
According to information from diplomatic sources and preliminary readouts of the talks, the discussions focused on the long-standing but often strained Türkiye–European Union relationship, with particular emphasis on updating key cooperation frameworks. These include the modernization of the Customs Union, progress on visa liberalisation dialogue, and renewed coordination on migration management.
Migration was one of the central topics on the agenda, with both sides reviewing ongoing cooperation under existing agreements related to irregular migration flows and refugee support. EU officials are understood to have highlighted the importance of continued cooperation in managing regional displacement routes, while Turkish officials reiterated the need for greater financial and political support for host communities.
Security developments in Europe and the wider region were also discussed, including the ongoing war in Ukraine and broader instability in the Middle East. Both sides reportedly exchanged views on how to improve coordination on regional crises and humanitarian challenges, including the situation in Gaza and its wider impact on regional stability.
The meeting comes at a time when Brussels has shown cautious interest in re-engaging with Ankara after years of stalled accession talks, while Türkiye continues to signal its expectation of more concrete steps from the EU regarding integration processes and strategic cooperation.
Although no major formal agreements were announced immediately after the talks, both sides described the meeting as “constructive,” and officials indicated that follow-up technical-level discussions are expected in the coming weeks to further develop the agenda outlined during the Ankara meeting.
