AFAD delivers over 104,000 tons of aid to Gaza, says Interior Minister
Türkiye’s Minister of Interior Ali Yerlikaya has highlighted the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency’s (AFAD) expanding global role as the agency marks the 16th anniversary of its establishment.
In a statement shared on social media, Yerlikaya recalled that AFAD was founded in 2009 and has since grown into Türkiye’s principal disaster management institution, standing by the nation before, during, and after disasters.
According to the minister, AFAD currently employs 8,397 personnel and is supported by 1.6 million volunteers. Its operational capacity includes 149,873 trained search-and-rescue workers and an inventory of 1,259 intervention vehicles and pieces of equipment.
Yerlikaya said Türkiye has transitioned from crisis management to risk management in disaster response through AFAD, emphasizing that the agency played a central role in what he described as “the world’s largest recovery operation” following the “Disaster of the Century.”
“AFAD is not just an institution; it is a companion in dark days,” Yerlikaya said, noting that the agency works to restore life wherever disasters strike.
The interior minister also underlined AFAD’s international humanitarian efforts, stating that over the past 16 years the agency has taken part in aid and search-and-rescue operations on five continents in more than 80 countries, becoming “the voice of the global conscience.”
He added that in response to Israel’s genocide in Gaza, AFAD has delivered more than 104,000 tons of humanitarian aid to Palestinians through 14 aircraft and 19 vessels known as “Goodness Ships.”
Praising the dedication of AFAD personnel and volunteers, Yerlikaya thanked search-and-rescue teams who work through the night at disaster sites and volunteers who provide essential support such as blankets, food, and prayers.
“If our nation was not left alone in difficult times, if hope remained alive and a helping hand was always extended,” Yerlikaya said, “AFAD was there.” (ILKHA)
