Measles death toll in Bangladesh climbs to 712 as outbreak continues to surge
Bangladesh's ongoing measles outbreak continues to worsen, with health authorities reporting four additional deaths and hundreds of new infections over the past 24 hours, pushing the nationwide death toll to 712.
According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), the latest fatalities were recorded up to 8:00 a.m. on Sunday and have been classified as suspected measles-related deaths pending further verification.
The new deaths have raised the total number of suspected measles fatalities to 619, while the number of laboratory-confirmed measles deaths remains unchanged at 93. Combined, the outbreak has now claimed 712 lives across the country.
Health officials also reported a significant increase in infections, with 941 new suspected measles cases identified during the latest reporting period.
The addition brings the cumulative number of suspected measles cases nationwide to 99,207, highlighting the continued spread of the highly contagious disease despite ongoing public health efforts.
Laboratory testing also confirmed 116 new measles infections during the same period, raising the total number of confirmed cases to 11,710.
Public health experts have expressed concern that the true scale of the outbreak may be even larger, as many suspected cases remain under investigation and laboratory capacity continues to face pressure amid rising demand.
The DGHS reported that since April 10, a total of 82,844 patients suffering from suspected measles symptoms have been admitted to hospitals and healthcare facilities across Bangladesh.
Of those hospitalized, 79,152 patients have recovered and been discharged, while thousands remain under treatment or observation.
Healthcare workers continue to face mounting challenges as hospitals deal with large numbers of patients, particularly children, who are among the most vulnerable to severe complications associated with measles.
Officials have urged parents and caregivers to seek medical attention immediately if children develop symptoms consistent with measles, including high fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and skin rashes.
The government and health agencies have intensified disease surveillance, treatment efforts, and vaccination campaigns aimed at containing the outbreak and preventing further loss of life.
Public health authorities have repeatedly emphasized that vaccination remains the most effective defense against measles and have called on communities to ensure children receive recommended immunizations.
The outbreak has become one of Bangladesh's most serious public health emergencies in recent years, placing considerable strain on hospitals and healthcare workers nationwide.
As new infections continue to be reported daily, health officials warn that sustained prevention measures, expanded vaccination coverage, and community awareness campaigns will be essential to bringing the outbreak under control and preventing additional fatalities in the coming weeks. (ILKHA)
