Two killed, thousands affected as storm Claudia sweeps across Portugal
Storm Claudia has unleashed heavy rainfall and widespread flooding across southern Portugal, leaving two people dead and cutting electricity to thousands as emergency crews race to manage the damage, authorities said Saturday.
According to the National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection (ANEPC), the fatalities occurred in the town of Fernão Ferro in the Setúbal district, about 30 kilometers south of Lisbon. An elderly couple died after their home was inundated when intense overnight rain caused sudden flooding throughout the area.
Emergency teams evacuated at least five people from flooded homes, while hundreds of weather-related incidents—including road blockages, damaged infrastructure, fallen trees, and rising water levels—were reported as the storm swept across the country.
The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) upgraded Setúbal’s weather alert to red, its highest level, due to the risk of severe rainfall and flash floods. Other regions were placed under orange and yellow warnings as Claudia continued moving inland.
Nearly 13,000 residents lost access to electricity, particularly in low-lying regions where heavy rain quickly overwhelmed drainage systems. Authorities said strong winds and unrelenting downpours were complicating rescue and repair operations.
Officials urged the public to remain indoors and avoid non-essential travel, warning that additional rainfall could exacerbate the already dangerous conditions.
As Storm Claudia continues its path across mainland Portugal, emergency services remain on high alert and caution that disruptions could persist until weather conditions stabilize. (ILKHA)
