Two dead, child injured in shooting at California public library
Two adults were killed and a child was injured in a shooting incident at the Chico branch of the Butte County Library in Northern California on Monday afternoon, local authorities confirmed.
Chico Police officers responded to a 911 emergency call reporting gunfire inside the facility shortly after 5:00 p.m. and entered the building immediately upon arrival.
During a press briefing, Chico Police Chief Billy Aldridge stated that the suspect attempted to escape through the library's rear exit as officers breached the front entrance. Law enforcement personnel positioned outside the back of the building intercepted and detained the armed suspect without further incident.
The injured child was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment. Officials described the child's injury as minor. Chief Aldridge added that investigators believe the suspect acted alone and that there is no remaining threat to the community.
Following the incident, law enforcement established a reunification center at a nearby church for individuals who were inside the library during the shooting. Butte County administration announced that all county library branches will be closed on Tuesday.
A firearm was recovered from the suspect at the scene. Police and forensic investigators have not yet released the identity of the shooter or a suspected motive, stating that the investigation is ongoing. (ILKHA)
