Syrian security forces arrest key associate of Yisar al-Assad in Latakia
Syria's Internal Security Forces announced on Monday the arrest of Wissam Saji Osman, described by authorities as the office director of Yisar al-Assad, on charges related to violations and crimes committed against unarmed civilians in the country's coastal region.
According to the security command in Latakia province, Osman is accused of playing a key role in activities linked to the violence that unfolded along Syria's coast in March 2025. Authorities allege that he was involved in managing recruitment operations and facilitating the provision of financial and military support during the events, acting under the backing and direction of Yisar al-Assad.
The arrest followed what officials described as a targeted security operation based on extensive surveillance and monitoring of Osman's movements. Security forces detained him immediately after he entered Syrian territory, where authorities say he had attempted to evade justice.
Osman was apprehended in the Qardaha area of Latakia province, according to statements provided by the security command to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).
"The operation was carried out after a series of monitoring and tracking efforts that enabled security personnel to identify and intercept the suspect upon his return to Syrian territory," the security command said.
Authorities added that Osman has been referred to the competent judicial authorities to complete the necessary investigations and legal proceedings.
The security command stated that all judicial measures against the suspect will be pursued in accordance with applicable Syrian laws and procedures.
The announcement comes amid ongoing efforts by Syria's interim authorities to investigate crimes linked to the unrest and violence that affected parts of the country's coastal region earlier this year, with officials pledging to hold those responsible accountable through the judicial process.
