Syria issues customs decree to reinforce longstanding ban on Israeli goods
The Syrian administration has enacted a new law formally banning all commercial relations with the Israeli regime, tightening longstanding boycott measures under the framework of the “national security” protections.
According to Syria’s state news agency Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa signed Legislative Decree No. 109 of 2026, introducing a revised customs law that replaces previous legislation dating back to 2006.
Under the new decree, products originating from the Israeli regime are explicitly prohibited from entering Syrian territory. The law also authorizes authorities to extend restrictions to goods coming from countries subjected to economic boycott measures.
The legislation further strengthens enforcement mechanisms by allowing customs courts to issue “accelerated execution” rulings in certain cases. Goods linked to the Israeli regime are classified alongside major offenses such as arms smuggling and narcotics trafficking, reflecting the government’s intensified stance on economic normalization.
Syrian authorities also warned that false declarations in shipping or customs documents related to boycotted entities could result in severe financial penalties and legal sanctions.
The move is being viewed within the broader historical framework of the Arab League’s boycott policies against the occupation regime, which date back to the 1950s. Analysts say the latest decree reinforces Damascus’ longstanding rejection of any commercial, economic, or investment ties with the Israeli entity amid continuing regional tensions and the ongoing aggression against Palestinians in Gaza.
Syria has consistently opposed normalization efforts with the occupation regime and has repeatedly linked its position to the continued occupation of Palestinian and Syrian territories. (ILKHA)
