Putin confirms trilateral peace talks on Ukraine war in Abu Dhabi
Russian President Vladimir Putin has confirmed that the next round of trilateral negotiations between Russia, the United States and Ukraine will take place in Abu Dhabi on November 10-11, as diplomatic efforts to end the ongoing war continue.
Speaking at a meeting with permanent members of Russia's Security Council on Friday, Putin said he had invited members of the Russian delegation who would travel to the United Arab Emirates to participate in the negotiations.
"Given that the negotiations are expected to take place on Tuesday, I invited colleagues who will participate in these talks," Putin said, according to Russian state news agency RIA Novosti.
The meeting was attended by presidential aide Vladimir Medinsky, head of the Main Directorate of the General Staff Igor Kostyukov, presidential aide Yuri Ushakov, Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin and Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov, according to TASS.
Russian state media reported that the negotiations would last two days, with the Russian delegation led by Medinsky, who has previously represented Moscow in negotiations with Ukraine.
Putin also expressed gratitude to the United Arab Emirates for hosting the talks and supporting efforts to resolve the conflict, including humanitarian initiatives and prisoner exchanges.
The upcoming negotiations were announced earlier by US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, who said Washington would bring Russian and Ukrainian delegations together in Abu Dhabi on November 10-11.
Witkoff said discussions would focus on post-war security arrangements, de-escalation, humanitarian measures and further steps towards ending the conflict.
Witkoff and US lead negotiator Jared Kushner are expected to represent Washington at the talks, according to a senior US official cited by Reuters.
Ahead of the Abu Dhabi negotiations, US officials are also expected to hold working-level discussions in Brussels with representatives from France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the European Union and NATO. Those meetings will address security guarantees for Ukraine, Europe's future security framework and financial support for Ukraine's reconstruction.
The Kremlin confirmed on Tuesday that Russia would participate in the trilateral negotiations, with spokesman Dmitry Peskov announcing that Medinsky would head the Russian delegation.
The latest round marks a resumption of US-mediated diplomatic efforts following three rounds of negotiations earlier this year. The first two took place in Abu Dhabi on January 23-24 and February 4-5, while the third was held in Geneva on February 17-18.
Despite renewed diplomatic engagement, Moscow and Kyiv remain far apart on the terms of a potential peace settlement. Washington is seeking to secure a breakthrough before winter, as US President Donald Trump continues efforts to bring the war to an end.
The November 10-11 meeting is expected to provide another opportunity for the three sides to address outstanding security and humanitarian issues and explore a possible path towards a negotiated settlement. (ILKHA)
