New blood group discovered in South Indian woman

A groundbreaking medical discovery has been made in Kolar district, where a 38-year-old woman was found to have a previously unidentified blood group during preparations for cardiac surgery.
Initially identified as O Rh+, the most common blood type, her blood was incompatible with all available O-positive units, prompting further investigation.
The case was referred to the Advanced Immunohematology Reference Laboratory at the Rotary Bangalore TTK Blood Centre. Dr. Ankit Mathur, leading the investigation, explained, “Using advanced serological techniques, we found her blood to be ‘panreactive,’ incompatible with all test samples.”
Blood samples from 20 of her family members were tested, but none were a match. Despite this, the woman’s surgery was successfully completed without transfusion, thanks to careful management by her physicians and family.
Her blood samples, along with those of her family, were sent to the International Blood Group Reference Laboratory (IBGRL) in Bristol, UK, for advanced molecular testing. After ten months of research, scientists identified a new antigen within the Cromer (CR) blood group system, officially named CRIB—‘CR’ for Cromer and ‘IB’ for India, Bangalore. This historic finding was announced at the 35th Regional Congress of the International Society of Blood Transfusion (ISBT) in Milan, Italy, in June 2025, marking the woman as the first person in the world with the CRIB antigen.
The Rotary Bangalore TTK Blood Centre has since launched a Rare Donor Registry in collaboration with the Karnataka State Blood Transfusion Council, the Indian Council of Medical Research in Mumbai, and the ISBT. Dr. Mathur noted, “We have been instrumental in identifying and supporting patients with rare blood types, such as D- -, Rh null, and In b negative, with cases published and presented internationally.”
This discovery highlights the importance of advanced immunohematology and global collaboration in addressing rare medical challenges, ensuring better outcomes for patients with unique blood types. (ILKHA)
