Iraqi PM meets Hakan Fidan to discuss water cooperation, regional security
Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi met with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan in Baghdad on Saturday to discuss strengthening bilateral relations, advancing major economic projects and expanding security cooperation between the two neighbouring countries.
During the meeting, al-Zaidi stressed Iraq’s commitment to building a strong economic partnership with Türkiye, highlighting the importance of reaching a comprehensive water agreement and moving forward with the strategic Development Road Project, according to a statement from the Iraqi prime minister’s media office.
The two sides also discussed establishing a joint security operations room to address shared security concerns, alongside expanding cooperation in industry and increasing bilateral trade.
Al-Zaidi called on Turkish companies to take advantage of investment opportunities in Iraq, assuring them that the Iraqi government would provide the necessary facilities to support their operations.
Fidan conveyed the greetings of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and congratulated Iraq on completing the formation of its cabinet and assuming the presidency of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
The Turkish foreign minister reaffirmed Ankara’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation across various sectors. He also stressed the importance of implementing existing agreements and memorandums of understanding, particularly those related to the Development Road Project.
The Development Road Project aims to connect Iraq’s Grand Faw Port in the south to Türkiye and onward to European markets through a network of railways, roads and other transport infrastructure. The project is viewed by both countries as a potential driver of regional trade and economic integration.
Water cooperation remains another key issue in relations between Ankara and Baghdad, as Iraq faces persistent water shortages and seeks stronger arrangements for managing shared water resources.
The meeting reflects ongoing efforts by Türkiye and Iraq to deepen economic ties, coordinate on regional security and advance strategic initiatives intended to strengthen connectivity and promote shared prosperity. (ILKHA)
