Iranian, US delegations arrive in Switzerland for peace talks
Iranian and US delegations have arrived in Switzerland for peace talks, marking a new phase in diplomatic efforts following four months of war and a temporary ceasefire between the two countries.
The negotiations are expected to focus on the conditions for a permanent agreement after a 60-day ceasefire period brokered through diplomatic mediation. Officials from both sides are set to discuss a range of political, security and economic issues in an effort to prevent a return to hostilities.
Iranian state media reported that senior Iranian officials had reached Switzerland ahead of the talks, while US Vice President JD Vance also arrived in the country to participate in the negotiations.
Developments surrounding the Strait of Hormuz are expected to be among the key issues on the agenda. Iranian officials have suggested that the strategic waterway was closed during the conflict, while the United States has rejected those claims. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) said 55 commercial vessels transited the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday, carrying more than 17 million barrels of oil to global markets.
US President Donald Trump said no transit fees would be imposed on shipping passing through the strait during the ceasefire period. He also warned that alternative measures could be considered if the negotiations fail and tensions escalate once again.
Meanwhile, Mohammad Mokhber, an adviser to Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, accused Washington of failing to fulfill some of its commitments under the ceasefire arrangement.
The Iranian delegation is headed by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and includes Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, along with senior officials responsible for security and energy affairs.
The Switzerland talks are being closely watched as a potential step toward a broader agreement aimed at securing a lasting peace and reducing tensions across the region.(ILKHA)
