Indonesia intensifies firefighting efforts as forest blazes spread across Kalimantan
Indonesia has intensified efforts to contain widespread forest and land fires, particularly in the Kalimantan region, as authorities work to prevent the blazes from spreading further.
According to Indonesia’s Antara news agency, Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni said aerial and ground operations were continuing in central Kalimantan.
Antoni said authorities had conducted 26 water-bombing operations using aircraft to help extinguish the fires. Six firefighting helicopters had also been prepared for deployment but remained grounded due to poor visibility.
With adverse weather conditions limiting aerial operations, firefighting teams have stepped up efforts on the ground to contain the blazes.
Malaysia Offers Firefighting Assistance
As Indonesia continues to battle the fires, Malaysia has offered to provide additional support.
The Malaysian government has proposed sending three helicopters and 52 personnel to assist with firefighting operations. Indonesian authorities are assessing the technical and logistical arrangements required for the possible deployment.
The offer comes amid growing regional concern over the fires and the smoke pollution they generate, which can spread across national borders and affect air quality in neighbouring countries.
More Than 202,000 Hectares Affected
Data from Indonesia’s Ministry of Forestry show that more than 202,000 hectares of land were affected by fires between January and July.
Government figures also indicate that firefighting operations conducted in August and September involved 64 aircraft and 54,394 personnel as authorities responded to extensive outbreaks.
The fires have raised concerns across Southeast Asia, where smoke from Indonesian forest and land fires has repeatedly caused air pollution in neighbouring countries, including Malaysia and Singapore.
Dry Conditions Increase Fire Risks
Forest and land fires in Indonesia are frequently associated with the use of fire to clear land for agriculture. Peatlands pose a particular challenge because underground fires can persist for extended periods and are difficult to extinguish.
Experts have also warned that El Niño-related weather patterns, including reduced rainfall and prolonged dry conditions, can increase the likelihood and severity of fires.
Indonesia has experienced several major fire outbreaks in recent decades, with severe haze episodes affecting public health, transportation and economic activity across the region.
Authorities continue to focus on containing the current fires, while Malaysia’s proposed assistance could provide additional resources if deployment arrangements are finalised. (ILKHA)
