France imposes partial curfews after violent protests
France has introduced partial curfews in several northern cities, including Lille, following violent incidents and looting that erupted after nationwide protests over the weekend.
French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu instructed local authorities to impose targeted curfew measures in areas affected by unrest, saying the government was fully determined to restore public order.
Speaking after an interministerial crisis meeting, Lecornu said a nationwide state of emergency was not currently considered necessary, but that localized restrictions were more appropriate at this stage.
Following the prime minister's directive, curfews were imposed in several northern cities, including Lille, with restrictions applying from 8:00 pm to 6:00 am. Similar measures were announced in areas including Douai, Wattignies and Denain.
The measures came after a weekend of unrest that saw clashes, vandalism and looting in several French cities. Authorities reported widespread damage to businesses and public property following the violence.
Lecornu said the government's priority was to protect citizens, restore security and prevent further disorder.
The French government said further measures could be taken depending on developments and assessments by local authorities.(ILKHA)
