Explosions heard near Strait of Hormuz in southern Iran, cause remains unknown
Several explosions were heard in the coastal area of Sirik in Iran’s southern Hormozgan province on Wednesday night, Iranian media reported, with the cause and nature of the blasts remaining unclear.
Iran’s semi-official Fars News Agency reported that multiple explosion sounds were heard in the Kerpan area of Sirik, a coastal city overlooking the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
The official IRNA news agency also reported the incident, saying local sources had not yet determined the nature of the explosions. No immediate reports of casualties or property damage were available.
No official explanation had been issued by local authorities at the time of reporting, and there was no confirmed information indicating whether the sounds were caused by an attack, military activity or another incident.
The reports have drawn attention because of Sirik’s location along the Strait of Hormuz, a vital maritime corridor for global energy supplies.
The incident comes amid heightened regional tensions and disruptions to maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil supply passed in peacetime. Recent reporting has described a broader confrontation involving the United States and Iran, including restrictions affecting maritime traffic and Iranian ports.
However, no available evidence has established a connection between Wednesday night’s explosions and the wider regional tensions. The origin of the blasts, any potential damage and whether further official details will emerge remain unclear.
Further information is awaited from Iranian authorities. (ILKHA)
