2 pilots killed in air cargo plane crash in Philippines
Two pilots were killed on Thursday after a cargo aircraft crashed near an airport in the western Philippines, authorities confirmed, in the latest aviation incident to raise concerns over flight safety in the region.
According to the Philippine National Police Aviation Security Group, the crash occurred just outside the perimeter of an airport in Barangay Decalachao in Coron, a popular tourist destination in Palawan.
Initial reports indicate that the aircraft, a small cargo plane, went down shortly before landing. Both pilots on board were killed at the scene. No other passengers were reported, and there were no immediate reports of casualties on the ground.
Witnesses in nearby communities said they heard a loud sound followed by smoke rising from the crash site, prompting emergency services to respond quickly.
Rescue teams, including local police, fire units, and aviation personnel, were deployed to secure the area and recover the victims. Authorities cordoned off the crash site as investigators began examining the wreckage.
While the cause of the crash remains unclear, aviation authorities have launched a formal investigation. Early assessments suggest that mechanical failure or adverse weather conditions could be possible factors, though officials have not confirmed any specific cause.
The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines is expected to lead the technical investigation, including analysis of flight data, maintenance records, and air traffic communications.
Authorities reported that airport operations in Coron were not significantly disrupted, though precautionary measures were implemented temporarily following the crash.
Officials also noted that weather conditions in the area were being reviewed, as shifting winds and visibility can affect aircraft during approach and landing phases.
The Philippines, an archipelagic nation with heavy reliance on air transport between islands, regularly monitors aviation safety standards. While major incidents remain relatively rare, authorities stress the importance of strict compliance with safety protocols, particularly for smaller aircraft operating in regional routes.
Further updates are expected as investigators analyze evidence from the crash site and work to determine the sequence of events that led to the fatal accident. (ILKHA)
