Türkiye records highest May rainfall in 66 years
Precipitation across Türkiye in May reached its highest level in 66 years, according to data released by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, with rainfall significantly exceeding both seasonal averages and last year's figures.
The ministry's May 2026 Climate, Phenological Status and Irrigation Monitoring Statistics report showed that the nationwide average temperature stood at 15.7°C, 1.4°C below the 1991–2020 average.
The lowest temperature during the month was recorded at -2.0°C in Ardahan, while the highest reached 37.9°C in the Ceylanpinar district of Sanliurfa.
Türkiye recorded an average of 95.6 millimeters of rainfall in May, marking an increase of 81 percent over seasonal norms and 98 percent compared with the same month last year.
The report noted that nationwide May precipitation reached its highest level in 33 years, while the Mediterranean, Central Anatolia and Black Sea regions recorded their wettest May in 66 years.
Rainfall exceeded three times the seasonal average in parts of Mersin, Osmaniye, Ordu, Tokat and Samsun. In contrast, localized decreases were observed in Aydin, western Mugla and southwestern Antalya.
Data covering the water year from Oct. 1, 2025, to May 31, 2026, also pointed to exceptionally wet conditions.
Average precipitation during the period reached 650.9 millimeters nationwide, 34 percent above the long-term average and 75 percent higher than the previous year. The report said water-year precipitation had reached its highest level in 66 years.
The increase in rainfall boosted reservoir levels, with dam occupancy reaching 79.5 percent nationwide, strengthening the outlook for the country's water resources.
The report said higher precipitation had improved soil moisture levels and marked the beginning of a humid period favorable for plant growth. Agricultural conditions across the country were described as generally balanced and favorable.
Crop development, particularly for cereals and other major agricultural products, remained on track, with yield expectations projected to be near or above long-term averages.
The report warned of localized flood risks and fungal diseases in some areas due to excessive moisture. However, it said drought concerns had largely subsided and that the 2025–2026 agricultural production season was progressing under generally productive conditions. (ILKHA)
