Ankara strongly rejects European Parliament’s 2025 Türkiye report
Türkiye has categorically rejected the European Parliament’s 2025 Türkiye Report, describing it as biased, based on misinformation, and driven by a political agenda.
“The 2025 Türkiye Report adopted today contains flawed assessments based on misinformation and unfounded claims by anti-Türkiye circles,” the Ministry said in a statement on Wednesday.
The Ministry argued that the report reflects ideological clichés of certain European Parliament members and appears to be part of a deliberate effort to undermine the improving Türkiye-EU relations at a time when the strategic importance of the partnership is growing.
“It is clear that the report... aims to overshadow the current positive agenda,” the statement read. It further accused the European Parliament of providing a platform for terrorist organisations and anti-Türkiye elements, saying the approach demonstrates that the EP “is far from displaying a strategic vision for the future of Türkiye-EU relations.”
The Ministry particularly rejected sections of the report concerning Türkiye’s judiciary, including what it called baseless accusations against Justice Minister Akın Gürlek.
“We categorically reject the distortion of the ongoing judicial processes conducted by the independent Turkish judiciary and the targeting of Akın Gürlek,” the statement said.
The Foreign Ministry emphasised the independence and sovereignty of the Turkish judiciary, declaring that it is “not open to interference from any international institution, external actor or political circle.”
“Politically motivated attempts that target judicial processes and contradict the principle of judicial independence are unacceptable,” it added.
In conclusion, the Ministry called on the European Parliament to adopt a more constructive stance.
“In the current environment of heightened global challenges, we expect the EP to adopt an approach that will contribute to advancing the relations between Türkiye, a candidate country, and the EU on a constructive basis founded on shared interests,” the statement said.
The European Parliament’s annual country reports on Türkiye are often a source of tension between Ankara and the EU, frequently covering issues related to rule of law, human rights, and democratic standards. (ILKHA)
