Türkiye aims to expand natural gas storage capacity to 12 billion cubic metres by 2028
Türkiye is set to expand its natural gas storage capacity as part of its efforts to enhance energy security, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar announced.
Bayraktar emphasized the critical role of underground natural gas storage facilities in ensuring an uninterrupted gas supply and creating strategic reserves. He highlighted that Türkiye currently has a total storage capacity of 5.8 billion cubic metres, with 4.6 billion cubic metres stored in the North Marmara Natural Gas Underground Storage Facility and 1.2 billion cubic metres in the Tuz Lake Natural Gas Underground Storage Facility.
The minister noted that the existing storage facilities are operating at full capacity and that ongoing projects aim to increase storage to further strengthen energy supply security. He stressed that by 2028, with the expansion efforts underway, Türkiye’s natural gas storage capacity is expected to more than double, reaching approximately 12 billion cubic metres.
The move aligns with Türkiye’s broader energy strategy, which aims to reduce dependence on imports and enhance energy resilience in the face of global market fluctuations. (ILKHA)
