US intelligence: Xi Jinping orders PLA to achieve military control over Taiwan by 2027
Chinese President Xi Jinping has reportedly instructed the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) to achieve the capability to militarily control Taiwan by 2027, according to recent US intelligence assessments cited by the Wall Street Journal.
The revelation raises growing concerns over regional security and the potential for escalating military tensions in East Asia.
Journalist Yaroslav Trofimov notes that Washington’s perceived “isolation” during former President Donald Trump’s second term may have strengthened Beijing’s confidence in pursuing its Taiwan objectives. Chinese political analyst Shen Xue emphasized that unification with Taiwan is viewed as inevitable, with the main question being “how and when” it will occur. Shen stressed that while China prefers a peaceful resolution, this outcome depends on the absence of foreign interference.
In a November 24 phone call with Trump, Xi reportedly framed Taiwan’s reintegration as an integral part of the post-World War II international order, underlining that Beijing considers the issue both a national and global priority.
The report highlights growing military and strategic tensions in the region. Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi recently suggested that Japanese forces could intervene if China attempted an invasion of Taiwan, prompting a strong response from Beijing, including economic and diplomatic measures, as well as provocative remarks regarding Okinawa.
Taiwan remains a central point of friction between the United States and China. While the US does not formally recognize Taiwan’s independence, it continues to be the island’s largest arms supplier. Beijing consistently interprets US-Taiwan interactions as provocative acts.
Experts warn that shifts in US global priorities, combined with China’s growing confidence and military modernization, may significantly increase the risk of military confrontation around Taiwan in the coming years. (ILKHA)
