Two US soldiers killed, one missing after Iranian strike in Jordan
Two American troops were killed and a third remains missing after Iranian missile and drone strikes targeted US military positions in Jordan on Friday, military officials said.
CENTCOM said four additional US service members were injured during the operation and were transferred to hospitals in Jordan for medical treatment.
The US military did not disclose further details about the operation or explain the circumstances surrounding the casualties.
The announcement came a day after Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it had carried out a large-scale missile and drone operation against US military aircraft stationed in Jordan.
According to the IRGC, the attack was conducted in two phases using multiple ballistic missiles and a large number of drones, targeting American fighter aircraft and aerial refueling planes operating from military facilities in Jordan.
The IRGC claimed the operation destroyed several US fighter jets and refueling aircraft, while inflicting heavy damage on a number of others. The United States has not confirmed those claims.
The IRGC said the operation was launched in retaliation for recent US attacks originating from bases in Jordan against civilian targets in Bandar Abbas, in southern Iran.
According to the Iranian military, the US strikes hit bridges, residential neighborhoods, and a water pumping station, which Tehran described as attacks on civilian infrastructure and a serious violation of international law.
Iran said its retaliatory operation specifically targeted military facilities and aircraft that it alleged were directly involved in Washington's regional military campaign.
The IRGC also stated that the United States had relocated its regional command center from Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar to Al Azraq Air Base in Jordan following Iran's attack on the Qatari base last year.
According to the Iranian statement, Al Azraq has since become a major operational center for US military activities in the region.
The base reportedly hosts numerous aerial refueling aircraft as well as F-35, F-15, and F-16 fighter jets.
The IRGC further claimed that aircraft operating from the Jordanian base have participated in military operations targeting Palestine, Iran, and Lebanon.
Iranian military officials said the latest operation demonstrated that relocating US military assets within the region would not shield them from Iranian retaliation.
The IRGC reiterated that Iran retains the capability to target what it described as military infrastructure involved in attacks against the Islamic Republic and its regional allies.
The developments come amid escalating military tensions between Iran and the United States, with both sides exchanging strikes across the region in recent days, raising concerns over a broader regional conflict. (ILKHA)
