Two explosions rock military airport in Syria’s Idlib countryside
Two powerful explosions rocked the vicinity of Taftanaz military airport in northwestern Syria’s Idlib province on Friday, raising concerns among local residents, according to local media reports.
Syria TV, citing local sources, reported that the blasts occurred inside the airport and in the surrounding area, with initial accounts attributing them to remnants of the country’s long-running conflict.
No official reports of casualties or injuries among civilians or military personnel had emerged at the time of reporting. Initial accounts indicated that the material damage was limited.
The explosions come amid recurring incidents involving ammunition depots, weapons stockpiles and unexploded remnants of war across Idlib province and neighboring areas.
Similar incidents have killed dozens of people and injured hundreds since the middle of last year, according to reports cited in local coverage, with civilians living near affected sites accounting for a large proportion of the victims.
Syrian authorities have previously attributed explosions and fires at ammunition storage sites to factors including unsafe storage of munitions, high summer temperatures and human error.
Other risks stem from industrial and craft workshops operating near ammunition depots and the unsafe handling of unexploded ordnance and other remnants of past battles.
The latest blasts have renewed concerns about the dangers posed by unexploded ammunition and improperly stored explosive materials in both residential neighborhoods and military facilities.
The presence of war remnants continues to pose a threat to civilians in areas affected by years of fighting, highlighting the need for improved safety measures, proper ammunition storage and efforts to clear unexploded ordnance.
Further details about the cause of Friday’s explosions were not immediately available. (ILKHA)
