Six killed in Mumbai building collapse as monsoon rains hit India
At least six people were killed and one other was injured after part of a residential building collapsed amid heavy rainfall in Mumbai, the capital of India's Maharashtra state, authorities said.
The incident occurred late Sunday in the Mankhurd area of Mumbai, where a section of the three-storey building, which housed multiple families, suddenly gave way.
Rescue teams rushed to the scene and launched an operation to search for and rescue anyone trapped beneath the debris.
Authorities said the exact cause of the collapse remains under investigation. Officials are continuing rescue and assessment efforts while examining whether neighbouring buildings face any structural risk.
The heavy rainfall that battered Mumbai on Sunday also disrupted flight operations at the city's international airport for nearly an hour, flooded several roads, and caused numerous trees to fall across the city.
The India Meteorological Department issued a red alert for Mumbai, warning of extremely heavy rainfall.
The downpours also triggered landslides along the highway linking Mumbai and Pune, forcing road closures and disrupting traffic between the two cities. (ILKHA)
