Disease outbreaks and hunger deepen humanitarian crisis in Sudan as over 200,000 face grave risk
A worsening humanitarian crisis is unfolding in Sudan's North Kordofan State, where the spread of cholera and measles, coupled with severe shortages of food and essential medical supplies, has placed more than 200,000 people at risk, according to the Sudan Doctors Network.
The organization said that around 200,000 residents living in communities west of the city of Bara are struggling to survive amid disease outbreaks and a lack of basic necessities. More than 20,000 of those at risk are children, highlighting the growing threat to the region's most vulnerable population.
According to data released by health authorities, more than 100 measles cases have been recorded among children, while at least 45 cholera cases have been confirmed across the affected areas.
The network said healthcare services have been overwhelmed, with many medical facilities suffering from acute shortages of medicines, medical equipment, and other essential supplies.
The statement noted that hospitals, including Taybe ez-Zaatari Hospital and Umm Kureydim Hospital, continue to provide treatment despite lacking critical medical resources.
Persistent disruptions to supply chains have severely affected healthcare services, making it increasingly difficult to treat patients and contain the spread of disease.
The Sudan Doctors Network warned that unless barriers preventing humanitarian assistance from reaching the affected areas are removed, the death toll could rise significantly, particularly among children, elderly people, and other vulnerable groups.
The organization called on the United Nations, international humanitarian agencies, and global health authorities to urgently deliver medicines, vaccines, intravenous fluids, medical equipment, food, and clean drinking water to the affected communities.
According to figures released by Sudan's Ministry of Health on June 30, cholera has claimed 127 lives in North Kordofan and West Kordofan states, while a total of 911 cases have been recorded. The figures underscore the growing scale of the health emergency as humanitarian conditions continue to deteriorate.
