North Korea launches multiple ballistic missiles
North Korea fired multiple short-range ballistic missiles toward the East Sea (Sea of Japan) on Wednesday, with the projectiles landing outside Japan's exclusive economic zone (EEZ), according to South Korean and Japanese authorities.
South Korea's military said the missiles were launched eastward from an area near Pyongyang. The launches were detected and monitored by South Korean and allied defense authorities, which are conducting a detailed analysis of the missiles' flight characteristics.
Japan's Coast Guard also reported the launch of what was believed to be a North Korean ballistic missile, saying it fell into waters outside Japan's EEZ in the Sea of Japan.
No damage reported
The Japan Coast Guard urged vessels operating in the area to avoid approaching any missile debris and to immediately report any findings to Japanese authorities. No damage to ships or injuries were reported.
Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi, speaking during a visit to New Delhi, said Japan was working closely with the United States and South Korea to analyze the launches and assess their implications.
Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi instructed relevant government agencies to gather and analyze information, provide timely updates to the public, and ensure the safety of aircraft and maritime traffic.
Third missile launch this month
The latest launches marked North Korea's third ballistic missile test this month, following previous launches on Aug. 6 and Aug. 12.
The repeated missile tests come amid continued tensions on the Korean Peninsula, with Pyongyang maintaining its weapons development program despite international sanctions and repeated calls from the international community to halt ballistic missile activities.(ILKHA)
