New death in Israeli custody pushes Palestinian prisoner toll to 85 since October 2023
A young Palestinian detainee has died while in Israeli custody, raising renewed concerns over the treatment of Palestinian prisoners and the conditions inside Israeli detention facilities.
Official sources said the Palestinian General Authority for Civil Affairs informed both the Palestinian Detainees' Affairs Commission and the Palestinian Prisoners' Society on Wednesday of the death of 21-year-old Abdul Rahman Sufian Muhammad al-Sabateen from the town of Husan, west of Bethlehem.
According to the notification, al-Sabateen died at Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem while still under detention. He had been held since June 24, 2025, and remained in custody until his death. No official details were released regarding the exact cause of death.
Rights groups and prisoners’ institutions said that with al-Sabateen’s passing, the number of known Palestinian prisoners and detainees who have died in Israeli prisons since October 2023 has risen to 85, marking an unprecedented surge in deaths in a short period.
They stated that this represents the deadliest phase in the history of the Palestinian prisoner movement since 1967, bringing the total number of known Palestinian prisoner deaths since the beginning of the Israeli occupation to 322.
Officials also noted that dozens of detainees from Gaza are believed to be held under enforced disappearance, meaning the real number of deaths may be significantly higher than officially documented.
Palestinian institutions renewed their calls for international investigations into detention conditions and for independent medical and legal monitoring of Palestinian prisoners held by Israeli authorities. (ILKHA)
