Israeli settler violence continues to threaten Palestinian safety in occupied West Bank
Israeli settlers assaulted and temporarily detained several Palestinians in the occupied West Bank on Tuesday night, in the latest reported incident of settler violence targeting Palestinian residents.
According to local sources cited by the Palestinian news agency WAFA, settlers from an outpost in the al-Thuhour area of Deir Istiya, northwest of Salfit, intercepted a group of Palestinians, assaulted them and detained several people.
Those detained included Nael Rayan, Azzam Dhiab, Ahmad Khalaf and Dawoud Ziyada. They were subsequently released, the sources said.
The incident adds to growing concerns over the safety of Palestinian communities across the occupied West Bank, where attacks by Israeli settlers, restrictions on access to land and displacement continue to threaten residents’ livelihoods and security.
UN reports surge in settler violence
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported on October 15 that more than 2,060 settler attacks resulting in Palestinian casualties or property damage had been documented across approximately 300 communities in the occupied West Bank since the beginning of 2026.
During the reporting period of September 29 to October 12, OCHA recorded 244 settler-related incidents across 113 communities, averaging 17 incidents per day. Five Palestinians were killed and 246 injured by Israeli forces or settlers during the period, with 181 of those injured in settler attacks.
The attacks have affected Palestinian homes, agricultural land, livestock, water infrastructure and other essential assets, further undermining the ability of families to remain on their land.
Settler attacks fuel displacement
Humanitarian agencies have repeatedly warned that settler violence and restrictions on Palestinian access to their land are contributing to the displacement of Palestinian communities.
According to OCHA, 133 Palestinian communities had experienced displacement linked to settler attacks and related access restrictions since January 2023, including 13 communities displaced since the beginning of 2026.
The latest assault in Deir Istiya underscores continuing concerns over the protection of Palestinians living under Israeli occupation, as local communities face recurring threats to their physical safety, property and access to their land.
Palestinians and international humanitarian organizations have repeatedly called for effective measures to protect civilians and hold those responsible for attacks accountable. (ILKHA)
