Iran Islamic Republic rejects British couple’s appeal in espionage case
Iran Islamic Republic judiciary has rejected the appeal filed by British nationals Craig and Lindsay Foreman, upholding their espionage convictions in a case closely followed by Western media and governments.
Iran authorities confirmed that the appeal was dismissed following a judicial review process, while the case remains eligible for further examination by higher judicial bodies, including the Supreme Court.
The couple was detained in Iran in January 2025 during an overland motorcycle journey across the country. They were later accused of espionage by Iranian authorities, who said the case involved national security concerns. In February 2025, both individuals were sentenced to 10 years in prison.
The ruling has drawn criticism from family members and Western officials, who have raised concerns over due process, transparency, and access to legal representation. Iranian authorities, however, maintain that the proceedings were conducted in accordance with domestic law and that the evidence was sufficient to support the conviction.
Reports in Western media claiming that the couple has begun a hunger strike have not been officially confirmed by Iran authorities. Meanwhile, the family has called on the British government to increase diplomatic pressure on Tehran.
The United Kingdom Foreign Office continues to advise its citizens against travel to Iran, citing security risks and the possibility of detention. Despite these warnings, the Foremans entered the country as part of a long-distance motorcycle journey.
Iran officials have reiterated that judicial decisions related to national security cases are internal matters and are not subject to external intervention.(ILKHA)
