Gaza death toll surpasses 60,100 as Israeli assault pushes humanitarian crisis to breaking point

The death toll from Israel’s ongoing military assault on the Gaza Strip has climbed to 60,138, with more than 146,200 injured since October 2023, the Gaza Health Ministry reported on Wednesday.
In the past 24 hours alone, at least 104 bodies were brought to hospitals, while 399 people were injured. Many victims remain trapped under rubble or lying in streets as rescuers are unable to reach them due to continuous bombardment and the destruction of access roads.
The ministry said at least 60 Palestinians were killed and 195 injured in the last day while attempting to collect humanitarian aid. Since May 27, 1,239 people have been killed and more than 8,152 wounded in such incidents, underscoring the extreme risks civilians face in securing food, water, and medical supplies.
Israel resumed its military operations on March 18, shattering a ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement that had held since January. Since then, 8,970 people have been killed and 34,228 injured in renewed air and ground assaults.
Rights groups, including B’Tselem and Physicians for Human Rights–Israel, have accused Israel of committing genocide, citing the systematic destruction of civilian infrastructure and the deliberate dismantling of Gaza’s healthcare system.
The humanitarian situation in Gaza has reached unprecedented levels of crisis, with famine conditions rapidly spreading. According to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), two out of the three famine thresholds have already been breached. More than 500,000 people—around a quarter of Gaza’s population—are enduring famine-like conditions, while the remainder faces emergency-level hunger. Among the most vulnerable are over 320,000 children under the age of five, who are at risk of acute malnutrition, with thousands already suffering from its most severe form. (ILKHA)
