Al-Qassam: Aid to captives possible if starving Gaza receives lifesaving supplies

The Al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, announced on Sunday their willingness to allow food and medicine deliveries to Israeli captives held in Gaza, but only if Israel lifts its blockade to ensure equivalent humanitarian aid reaches the starving Palestinian population.
In a statement posted on his official Telegram channel, Al-Qassam spokesperson Abu Obeida said the group is prepared to cooperate with the Red Cross to deliver supplies to the captives, provided Israel opens "humanitarian corridors naturally and permanently" to allow food and medicine to flow to Gaza’s residents. He also demanded a cessation of Israeli airstrikes during aid transfers.
Abu Obeida rejected claims that the group deliberately deprives captives of food, stating: “The Al-Qassam Brigades do not deliberately starve the captives. They eat what our fighters and our people eat. They will not receive any special privileges amid this crime of starvation and siege.”
The announcement follows the release of a video on July 27 showing Israeli soldier Avitar David, one of the captives, appearing emaciated. In the footage, David appealed to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, accusing him of abandoning the captives by rejecting a ceasefire deal that could secure their release. David described surviving on limited rations of lentils and beans, reflecting the severe shortages faced by over two million Palestinians in Gaza.
Gaza’s humanitarian crisis has worsened dramatically since Israel imposed a total siege in October 2023, blocking food, water, fuel, and medical supplies, with all crossings closed since March 2024. Rights groups have condemned the measures as collective punishment and a deliberate starvation policy. UN officials have described the crisis as “entirely man-made,” warning of an imminent famine and an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe in the Strip.
