The Palestinian Prisoners’ Society (PPS) said Thursday that at least 92 Palestinian prisoners and detainees whose identities have been confirmed have died in Israeli custody since October 2023, including 53 from the Gaza Strip.

The latest death was that of 21-year-old Moataz Nizam al-Atrash from Hebron, who died in Israeli custody, according to Palestinian prisoner institutions and his family. Al-Atrash had been held in administrative detention at Ofer Prison since October 2025 without charge or trial. Palestinian sources said the circumstances and cause of his death remain unclear.

In a statement, the PPS said the deaths were linked to what it described as a broader system of abuses in Israeli prisons and detention facilities, including torture, starvation, medical neglect, physical mistreatment, sexual violence, humiliation and the denial of basic rights.

The organization said the actual death toll among Palestinian detainees could be higher because the fate of numerous detainees from Gaza remains unknown. It said the continued lack of information amounts to enforced disappearance and that testimonies collected from released detainees point to additional deaths and alleged executions in detention.

The PPS said the latest death brings the number of identified Palestinian prisoners who have died in Israeli custody since 1967 to 329.

It also said Israeli authorities are currently withholding the bodies of 100 deceased Palestinian prisoners, including 89 who died since the beginning of the Gaza war in October 2023.

Al-Atrash's death has renewed concerns over the treatment of Palestinians held under administrative detention.

According to Palestinian prisoner organizations, al-Atrash had been detained without charge or trial for more than 11 months. His family said he had not suffered from any known health problems before his detention, while Israeli authorities reportedly informed his family of his death without initially providing details about the circumstances.

The Palestinian Authority's Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs and the Palestinian Prisoners' Club have called for clarification of the circumstances surrounding his death.

The latest figures from Addameer, another Palestinian prisoners' rights organization, indicate that approximately 9,350 Palestinian prisoners and detainees were being held in Israeli prisons and detention centers at the beginning of September. The figure included more than 3,100 administrative detainees and more than 350 children.

Concerns over Palestinian detainee deaths have also been documented by international bodies.

A UN Commission of Inquiry previously reported that at least 53 Palestinian detainees had died in Israeli detention facilities between October 2023 and July 2024, while raising concerns over allegations of severe mistreatment and the lack of transparent investigations into deaths in custody.

Amnesty International has likewise documented allegations of torture and other ill-treatment of Palestinian detainees and reported that dozens had died in Israeli custody. It has called for independent investigations into deaths and alleged violations.

The PPS says the continued withholding of information about Gaza detainees makes it impossible to establish the full scale of deaths in Israeli custody.

Palestinian prisoner organizations have called for international intervention, independent investigations into deaths in detention and the disclosure of the whereabouts and condition of detainees whose fate remains unknown. (ILKHA)
