Turkish universities expand environmental and climate research efforts on World Environment Day
As the world marks World Environment Day on June 5, the role of universities in addressing environmental challenges has once again come into focus. Across Türkiye, higher education institutions are expanding research and innovation projects in renewable energy, water management, sustainable agriculture, recycling, and climate resilience, contributing to broader sustainability goals.
Universities across the country have increasingly positioned themselves as research hubs supporting environmental transformation through scientific studies, technological innovation, and sustainability-focused policies aimed at reducing ecological impact.
Renewable energy and low-carbon technologies
Several Turkish universities have accelerated projects designed to improve energy efficiency and support low-emission technologies.
Yıldız Technical University has introduced initiatives focused on waste management and carbon reduction strategies, while Tokat Gaziosmanpaşa University Hospital has expanded renewable energy use through solar power installations.
Under the coordination of Istanbul Technical University, the ILATERA Platform is working on clean energy systems and low-emission transportation technologies. Anadolu University has also introduced digital solutions aimed at reducing paper consumption and improving energy and water efficiency.
Water management and ecosystem protection
Water conservation and ecosystem sustainability remain among the main priorities of environmental research programs.
Yaşar University has implemented rainwater harvesting systems to improve water efficiency, while Istanbul University continues conducting research into ecosystem changes and mucilage-related risks in the Marmara Sea.
Researchers at Aksaray University are developing technologies aimed at reducing boron contamination in wastewater systems, addressing environmental risks associated with industrial pollution.
Sustainable agriculture and food security
Universities are also increasing research efforts related to sustainable agriculture and food systems.
Boğaziçi University is developing environmentally friendly agricultural solutions using tea waste materials, while Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University is working on domestic technologies designed to accelerate seed classification processes in agricultural production.
Uşak University has highlighted hydroponic farming applications as an alternative agricultural model, while Bursa Uludağ University continues research focusing on sustainable agriculture and food security.
Additional projects at Giresun University and Karabük University focus on sustainable agricultural practices, local food systems, and preserving regional culinary heritage.
Recycling, circular economy and green transformation
Research into circular economy models and sustainable production systems has also gained momentum.
Kocaeli University is developing digital and green transformation models for port infrastructure, while Maltepe University focuses on sustainable supply chain systems.
Çağ University has launched projects related to industrial waste recovery, and Pamukkale University is expanding research into textile recycling and artificial intelligence-supported environmental optimization systems.
Istanbul Okan University is supporting circular economy practices through composting and food waste management initiatives.
Education and environmental awareness
Beyond technological research, universities are also increasing efforts to strengthen environmental awareness and sustainability education.
Middle East Technical University has expanded climate education initiatives aimed at promoting sustainability awareness, while Ankara University continues academic studies focused on environmental sustainability and natural resource protection.
Bolu Abant İzzet Baysal University, İskenderun Technical University, Isparta University of Applied Sciences, and Atatürk University are among institutions expanding projects related to climate change, environmental management, resource efficiency, and sustainable development.
As environmental pressures intensify globally, universities in Türkiye are increasingly positioning scientific research and innovation as central tools in addressing climate-related challenges and supporting sustainable development objectives. (ILKHA)
