Three earthquakes strike southern Türkiye, tremors felt in Syria
Three earthquakes struck southern Türkiye on Sunday, with tremors felt in parts of northern Syria, according to Syria’s National Earthquake Center and Türkiye’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD).
Syria’s National Earthquake Center reported that the first quake, measuring 4.4, occurred at 2:19 p.m. local time at a depth of 36 kilometers, about 117 kilometers northeast of Adana.
A second quake of the same magnitude was recorded at 2:36 p.m., approximately 139 kilometers northeast of Adana, followed by a 4.6-magnitude tremor at 2:43 p.m., about 106 kilometers northeast of the city.
The center said the earthquakes occurred along the East Anatolian Fault and were felt in parts of northern Syria.
AFAD reported different magnitudes and locations for the seismic events.
According to the Turkish authority, a magnitude 4.8 earthquake struck the Saimbeyli district of Adana province at 2:19 p.m. at a depth of 7.99 kilometers.
A second quake, measuring 4.9, hit the same district at 2:36 p.m. at a depth of 8.67 kilometers.
AFAD subsequently reported a magnitude 5.2 earthquake in the Sumbas district of Osmaniye province at a depth of 7 kilometers.
Adana Governor Mustafa Yavuz said the province’s emergency call center had received no reports of adverse effects following the two earthquakes, adding that response teams were continuing field assessments.
Osmaniye Governor Mehmet Fatih Serdengeçti said authorities had coordinated with relevant institutions and that no adverse situation had been reported in the province.
Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Minister Murat Kurum said authorities were closely monitoring developments and assessing reports following the earthquakes in Adana and Osmaniye.
Syria’s National Earthquake Center reported no casualties or damage in Syria in its statement.
