Türkiye's chemical sector tops Mediterranean region exports in May
The chemical industry became the leading export sector in Türkiye's Mediterranean region in May, according to figures released by the Mediterranean Exporters' Associations (AKIB), while Spain emerged as the region's largest export destination during the month.
AKIB announced its May 2026 export performance, revealing that the Mediterranean Chemicals and Chemical Products Exporters' Association recorded the highest export value among the unions operating under its umbrella.
The Mediterranean Ferrous and Non-Ferrous Metals Exporters' Association ranked second, followed by the Mediterranean Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Exporters' Association.
Chemical exports record strong growth
Data showed that exports by the Mediterranean Chemicals and Chemical Products Exporters' Association rose by 63 percent compared to the same period last year, reaching 637.1 million dollars.
The sector's strong performance made it the largest contributor to the region's overall exports, highlighting continued international demand for Turkish chemical products.
The export figures also underscored the importance of industrial production and manufacturing sectors in supporting Türkiye's foreign trade performance.
Spain remains leading export market
Spain ranked first among export destinations for AKIB members in May. Iraq, the Netherlands, Romania and Italy followed as other major markets for regional exporters.
The data indicated that the Mediterranean region maintained a diversified export structure and continued to benefit from strong trade ties with European markets, which remain among the key drivers of export growth.
Chemical products, ferrous and non-ferrous metals, and fresh fruit and vegetables stood out as the main pillars of export activity during the month, contributing significantly to the region's external trade performance.
The latest figures point to sustained momentum in the Mediterranean region's export sector despite ongoing uncertainties in global markets, reinforcing its role as one of Türkiye's major export hubs.(ILKHA)
