Türkiye’s health spending rises 89.6% in 2024
Türkiye’s total health expenditure increased by 89.6% in 2024, reaching 2 trillion 359 billion 151 million Turkish liras, the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) announced on Thursday.
According to the data, general government health expenditure reached 1 trillion 794 billion 227 million liras, up 86.1% from the previous year. Private sector health expenditure rose 101.8% to 564 billion 924 million liras.
TurkStat reported that 76.1% of Türkiye’s total health expenditure was financed by the general government, while the private sector accounted for 23.9%. Within this distribution, 39.5% of spending came from the Social Security Institution (SGK), 36% from the central government, 18.8% from households, 2.8% from insurance companies, 2.4% from non-profit organizations and other enterprises, and 0.6% from local governments.
The share of total health expenditure in Türkiye’s gross domestic product (GDP) rose to 5.3% in 2024, up from 4.6% in 2023. The ratio of current health expenditure to GDP was 4.9%, compared to 4.2% in the previous year.
Hospitals accounted for the largest share of health spending in 2024, representing 54.6% of total expenditure. They were followed by retail and other providers of medical goods at 19.6%, and ambulatory healthcare providers at 11%.
Current health expenditure rose 92.7% to 2 trillion 186 billion 802 million liras. Investment spending in the health sector increased 57.6% to 172 billion 349 million liras.
Per capita health expenditure reached 27,587 liras, marking an 89.2% increase from 2023. In U.S. dollar terms, per capita spending rose 35.3% to $840, compared to $621 in 2023.
Household out-of-pocket health spending, including treatment costs and pharmaceuticals, increased 100.2% to 442 billion 356 million liras. Household payments accounted for 18.8% of total health expenditure in 2024. (ILKHA)
